Charcoal Bamboo {Product Review}

  So a while ago I did a review of a facial sponge. Well, today I am reviewing a similar sponge that is from a different company and has a different thing to offer. How is it different, you may ask? Well, this sponge has charcoal. Bamboo charcoal, in fact. This product is actually by a company called MY Konjac Sponge, so I assume the majority of what they make involves konjac sponges of different kinds. The tag line of the company is 'Your skins best friend.'

  As I had already reviewed a similar sponge, one might think it strange for me to review another, but as they are different products I thought it might be nice to evaluate this one as well, and I was interested in trying this charcoal bamboo one.

 The sponge is the same shape, a teardrop, as the first sponge I tried so I think that must be a common shape for this type of item. It also comes with a string for hanging up. My new bathroom (I'll post photos eventually once I share more news about my renovation experience) has a row of hooks for towels and whatnot, so that worked nicely to hang the sponge on so it would dry out naturally. You aren't supposed to wring these sponges as the fibers are sensitive.

 Let me just go over what is inside this sponge, or rather, just what it is, and what is konjac? Well, konjac comes from a plant that grows natively in eastern Asia. It is a fiber from the plant and has apparently been used in Asian beauty for a long time. I guess it's recently grown more popular in the States. And it has activated bamboo charcoal, all of these things adding up to good skin.

 When it comes to washing my face, I've found myself really enjoying facial sponges. I don't use them all the time, but I'd much rather use them than a wash cloth. The fibers feel so smooth and lovely against your skin, and it is a natural way to clean it. You can pair it with a cleanser as well, and it will be a much gentler treatment, leaving your skin nice and dewy. Of course, the dewiness doesn't last, so make sure you apply moisturizer afterward.

 I think this is a really lovely product to own and I have been enjoying it and will enjoy it for a while since it has a pretty good time length you can use it. These sponges from MY Konjac Sponge are available at many health food stores like Whole Foods Market or even online, like here.

  BONUS: These products or vegan free and have the highest standards against animal cruelty. All natural and all safe.

Adeline Anti-Aging Moisturizer {Product Review}

 Hi everyone. My obsession with moisturizer continues. It seems the more I try different kinds the more I want to try other kinds. On the other hand, I'm building myself a good collection and won't need to buy any for a while. So this evening I am reviewing Adeline Anti-Aging Moisturizer from Adeline Skincare. I received this product from the company and Tomoson in exchange for my honest review.

 When the package arrived it soon became evident that some care had not been taken in getting it to my house. And it wasn't the company's fault in any way. The package deliverers somewhere along the way mishandled it. But it's okay, because nothing was severely damaged. As you can see from my photograph, the only strange thing is that the sides of the cap are bent in. The actual product wasn't affected at all.

 As soon as it arrived it went onto my mom's dresser like a few of my other products. She enjoys them just as much as I do. When I took it for testing purposes she was quick to ask me where it went. 

 The bottle is very pretty and classic looking. I like the look of the white and silver together. This moisturizer is unique to all of the others I've tried in the scent and feel of it. Most moisturizers have a fresh flowery sort of scent, or something floral or citrusy. Something. This one included mint. I can smell mint in it and I can feel the mint. I love mint, so this is a good thing.

 I like the feel of this moisturizer. It's a mix between thick and thin and wonderfully smooth. It goes on easily so you only need a small amount to cover your entire face. With the addition of the mint, it feels amazing. The mint makes you skin feel cool and tingly, and I just love that. It includes ingredients like Matrixyl, Witch Hazel, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C & Vitamin E. So it's extremely healthy for your skin. In the time I've used it, my skin has felt great. This moisturizer is pretty great.

Konjac Sponge! {Product Review}

 Hola! Remember that moisturizer I reviewed a couple of weeks ago from Oleavine? Well Oleavine also sent me a 100% plant based konjac sponge to review. Whoo hoo!

Here's the lovely packaging. Now let me tell you a bit about the sponge. It is completely natural. The fiber is actually grown on a volcanic island in South Korea, which is pretty cool. It is free from chemicals, enhancements, etc. It's not tested on animals or dyed. So it's just a really nice, all natural
beauty tool.

 As you can see with the photo to the right, it is very well and tightly packaged. In fact, it took my brother and I what seemed like several minutes to get the thing open, but we weren't using scissors. The sponge is hard when it isn't wet, as sponges tend to be, and feels almost like if you squeezed it it would break. That isn't really a surprise since after you use it you are encouraged not to wring it out because of its delicate fibers. After you open it, you soak it in warm water until the sponge gets full. I basically just held it under the faucet until the entire thing felt plenty soaked.

The actual application felt pretty nice. The sponge almost felt as if it had soap or something in it, though it didn't of course. I could tell that something was rubbing, but it wasn't unpleasant. In fact, Oleavine heralds the softness of this project and how it is good for everyone, even small children.
I liked it. I only tried it on my face, but you can use it on your entire body. I love Oleavine products. This is yet another score for me. After I was done, my skin felt really nice and soft. I can't wait to see what my skin feels like after extended use!

After you're done you get the excess water out by squeezing it between your palms and hanging. In my new bathroom (a story I may have to share with you guys) I happen to have a wall mount with hooks so it worked perfectly. Ta da! The sponge comes with a string attached for that purpose, so it worked out well.

Aquarian Bath Naturals {review}

 

Hey ladies! Sorry for the absence in posts. I just got back from a week-long beach vacay, and besides that have been just super busy with life in general.

 

Anyway! Several months back I was sent some natural bath products from Aquarian Bath.

 

"Aquarian Bath, Inc. is your source for all natural gentle soaps, herbal balms, and salves. All my soaps are either unscented or lightly scented with only pure essential oils. I've been trying to find natural alternatives to shampoo and conditioner for years. But most things I've discovered either don't work, or are too expensive for my limited budget. Have you ever been in this situation?

 

So, I enjoyed getting to use the hair bars and sea salt scrub that were given for me to review. I definitely made them last!

 

1. Ocean Waves sea salt scrub bar.  This is the bar furthest to the left in the picture above. It has a good lather and excellent exfoliating properties. My only complaint is that is doesn't really have a scent, and I prefer soaps with strong scents. Nonetheless, this is definitely a practical bar and it lasts a long while. You get your money's worth, so to speak. I liked using it as a facial bar to help with my oily skin.

 

2. Lavender Patchouli Hemp shampoo bar. This has a mild, pleasant scent. I liked it well enough. It worked decent as a shampoo, although a little harder to use than traditional shampoo. But that's expected of any shampoo bar versus liquid shampoo.

 

3. Key Lime shampoo bar.  This was my favorite of all the bars I was sent. I liked the smell, which was very fresh, citrus-y and tangy. Invigorating! It was the same as the lavender bar in consistency. I would use this one again. I don't really have any complaints here. The only thing is that it takes a little getting used to making the transition from liquid to solid shampoo, but like I said, that's expected and I'm not going to make a fuss over it!

Aquarian Bath is a family-owned business in Daytona Beach, FL. They don't use GMO oils of any kind which I'm pleased to see. Faith, Soaps & Love {review}

 

Good afternoon ladies!

 

Today we have a review from Faith, Soaps & Love. And as the title suggests, this review is all about...SOAP! Wonderfully delicious,  homemade soap.

 

 

I have to say that I knew I'd love this business from the moment I first browsed the Etsy store.

The variety of soap scents/styles available, combined with the fact that the store owner professes to be Christian with her use of Bible verses on the soap labels, made me instantly want to do a review with FS&L.

 

So I was delighted when Tracy agreed and sent me a few of her items.

 

She sent a both a Midnight Pomegranate and Dragon's Blood soap. And surprised me also with a corresponding solid lotion bar in Midnight Pomegranate.

 
 
 
 

 

Seriously, I love everything here.

The Midnight Pomegranate soap and lotion smell exactly like the Bath & Body Works originals, which I am a huge fan of and have used for years.

I've had everything sitting on my desk since I first got it in the mail, and my desk is where I do most of my studies/schoolwork and writing etc. So I've gotten to smell these wonderful scents the whole time and I've not even used them in the shower yet!

 

  All three products sent me were packaged very professionally. And as I said earlier, I love how there are Scripture verses included on the business cards and on the solid lotion tube container.

 

 

Speaking of the solid lotion, this has been one of my favorite beauty products lately.

I know it was intended for use as obviously a moisturizer, but I've been utilizing it as a solid perfume since I love the smell so much. I just rub it on my wrists, lower forearms and neck - voila! I smell instantly fabulous. Of course, it also works wonderfully for its original purpose as a lotion - I usually feel my hands get very dry after I wash dishes so I rubbed some of this on them and it definitely improved their condition.

 

In short, if I buy any more lotion - or solid perfume in the future, it will probably be from here. You can get a tube for $6.50 which is a pretty good price for quality, homemade goods!

 

The Dragon's Blood soap is amazing. I showed it to Mom and she wants to try it out, she liked the scent so much. She even asked if she could 'do a review' of it. Haha!

But in all seriousness, mmmm this is a nice soap. It even looks cool. You can't tell in any of my pictures really but there are these neat sparkly gold specks on the top ridges.

 

The scent is delightfully warm and enticing.  A tad on the exotic side.  Features hints of amber, vanilla and patchouli. Mmmm-mm!

 

The Midnight Pomegranate soap is of course my favorite. I could keep on smelling it for ages and not get tired of its wonderful aroma! Haha, so maybe I sound a little obsessed with wonderful smells right now. But hey, the sense of smell is a blessing is it not?

 

This soap has a very feminine, romantic scent. Fruity, of course! Along with the main notes of pomegranate, it features hints of orange, cinnamon and vanilla. Delishhh!

 

 

Overall, I recommend Faith, Soaps & Love 100%.

The products are phenomenal, and the shop owner was such a pleasure to work with. If I can support any Christian businesses I will certainly try to do so over a secular business. Supporting fellow brothers and sisters in the faith is something I think we should do as much as we're able.

Summer Accessory + Natural Beauty Haul!

 

Hola, mi amigas!

 

It's August! Can you believe we're already more than half-way into this year? School's about to start for a lot of kids, summer will soon be coming to a close, and time just seems to speed on faster and faster!

 

Well, to celebrate some of the awesome summer moments we've had so far, today I'm going to do a haul post - 3 different reviews all in one!

 

We'll start out with.....

 

An adorable JoHanna Martinez Coral Headband .  

 

This is a darling handmade accessory and perfect for summer. It's a metallic orange color. I don't usually wear a lot of orange but I have to say this is one I really like! It is a nice, bright summer-y hue and goes well with my hair color.

 

The design of the headband is very unique. It almost has a vintage feel to it.  The headband has an adjustable strap in the back, making it a comfortable one-size-fits-all. It stays put well in my hair, as I've already worn it numerous times, doing various different activities.

 

My new favorite thing to do with this hairband is to wear it with braids.

 

Overall, I love it! It's a very unique, chic piece and I enjoy wearing it as it's both practical and pretty.

Next up, a very charming vintage fish necklace from Iris Jane . 

 

Oh my goodness. This is such a cute piece! I have nothing bad to say about it. Nothing at all.

I simply adore the fish pendant. From the turquoise/gold color scheme to the little intricate details of the fish scales, tale and eyes, it's definitely a favorite piece. Once again, it's an accessory perfect for the summer months, or family vacation at the beach.

 

The chain is a gold color, and has it where you can adjust the length. I like wearing it semi-choker-esque, where the pendant just barely drops beneath my shoulder blades.

 

It's an eye-catching necklace and I love everything about it. The uniqueness of the fish pendant is the main draw for me since I like fresh, different-looking things.

 

Sadly since it's vintage I'm not sure where you could find one like it of your own, but you could check out the Iris Jane shop above anyway and maybe inquire about it if you were really interested.

 

 

 

Last but not least we have some awesome natural hair products from NightBlooming.

 

I first discovered NightBlooming by way of their fabulous hair sticks, but little did I know they also made some fab hair treatments and the like!

 

We'll start with the Panaceas Sample Salve Trio. Each of these salves above can be used on the tips of your hair to help strengthen the fibers and even help repair split ends and other damage.

 

I tried each of the three and didn't notice a very big difference between the three. You only use a very small amount each time, and it's always after you shower. I look forward to seeing long-term effects of using these salves! It looks like a promising concept.

 

 

 

I was also sent a Triple Moon Hair Annointing Oil , a beautiful handmade hairstick, and Moondust Herbal Dry Shampoo from NightBlooming.

 

To be honest, I'll admit I was a little skeptical of the hair oil in the beginning. For one thing, my hair is already VERY oily so I doubted this oil could really benefit me in any way.

 

I'm still testing it, so it's a work in progress so to speak. So far, I've been trying to follow the directions listed on the Etsy listing.

 

You rub a small amount into your scalp, an hour before showering. It is supposed to help strengthen the roots of your hair. (Of course, you wash it thoroughly when showering.)

 

I haven't been able to see any difference "before and after" using this, yet, but as I said I'm still testing it. It could be more of a long-term result for all I know. 

 

The hair stick was absolutely gorgeous. I really loved the colors - a bright, cheery blue base and mesmerizing transparent/milky blue fixture at the end. Very, very pretty. Also it's a good length - almost too short for my amount of hair to fit in, but it still worked. It came tucked primly in a felt case which I thought was a nice touch.

 

The Moondust herbal dry shampoo really interested me. I'm always curious to find out natural shampoo/conditioner alternatives.  However, the dry aspect of it doesn't thrill me too much. Mom tried it, and didn't really like that it was to be used in that way. She thought it was too messy.

I'm going to try it in more depth but so far I have to agree with her.

On a random note, next month I'm going to the Great Ozarks Mountain Shindig with my family for four days! I'm really, really, reallllllyyyy excited about it. I found out the other day that there will be a line dance on one evening, and that the dress code/suggested dress attire is semi-dressy/long dresses etc. I really would like to dress a bit more formally for it, but can't decide whether to go with a vintage/retro/'50s theme or a Western/country girl theme...eeek, help!

 

I've been looking for retro/50's style party dresses, but it seems like everything is either too expensive, not modest in some way or the waistline is incredibly small. Does anyone have any advice?

BrownSugarShop {review}

Hello, everyone!  Today I'm reviewing a face cleanse from a shop called BrownSugarShop.

I'm one of those weird people that always notices how things are packaged.  What kind of tissue paper they used; envelope, manila envelope, or box; maybe bubble wrap of packing peanuts.  This item was wrapped in really pretty sparkly tissue paper, inside a bubble wrap lined manila envelope.  Very well packaged.

This is the bottle.  The words just wouldn't show up with the camera I was using.

Here's the picture they used.  Easier to see, right?  Yeeeah.  I'm not a photographer.

Cleansing Grains can be used instead of soap to cleanse skin or as a mild scrub or exfoliant. These can be used for any skin type and won't scratch the skin. Very gentle and milk, great for sensitive skin.
To use simply pour a little bit into the palm of your hand and add a few drops of water, then gently scrub face in circular motion and rinse off. You could also mix with some Aloe Vera, Oil or Floral Water to make a Mask.

They suggest Aloe Vera, Oil, or Floral Water to make a mask.  I didn't have Aloe Vera or Floral Water, so I decided to try Oil.

That's what it looked like when I mixed it with oil.  I had to keep stirring it, though, because the cleansing grains kept settling to the bottom.

This is how it looked when I put it on.

Just a tip: TIE YOUR HAIR BACK WHEN YOU DO A FACE CLEANSE.  I'm just sayin', I got a lot of oil and grains and clay in my hair.  Something easily avoided.

Then I tried water.  It was very thick, but I put a lot of cleansing grains in.  You can make it thick or thin depending on how much of each you put in.

The water mix.  I like this more than the oil.  It was thicker, and I got less to cover more of my face.

The cleansing grains were really lumpy when I used them, but I figured out that was the clay.  You can't dissolve the clay.  But I liked it, overall.  I'm really bad at doing face washes, and this feels really nice.  It was rougher than I expected, but not too rough.

Plant Therapy Essential Oils {review}

 

 

Essential oils are a pivotal point in herbal home healing. I don't know how many of you ladies are already acquainted with them, but we've had a couple posts concerning them in the past here at APOC so hopefully you've had the pleasure of getting to use them at some point!

 

There are many different types of essential oils available on the market these days. How can you know what is good and what's to be avoided? While that question is one to be covered extensively on another post, we're going to take a look at some good, quality oils today.

 

Plant Therapy sent me two different oils to test in a recipe of some sort. I originally chose the oils based on the idea that I would make a homemade perfume from them.

 

The plan actually changed a bit though due to a reaction I had with one of the oils. Well, not quite a reaction, just...well, I wasn't so fond of wearing that particular oil on my skin, is all.

 

So.

 

 Firstly, I was sent a Pink Grapefruit essential oil, and a Ylang Ylang . 

 

The Pink Grapefruit (citrus racemosa) oil I am very fond of. It smells exactly like pink grapefruit, as it should.

 

Some of its suggested uses, according to the Plant Therapy website: Diffuse Grapefruit into the air to help with headaches, mental exhaustion and depression. It may be diluted in a bath, lotion or cream to assist with cellulite, colds and flu, lack of energy, jet lag, muscle fatigue, overweight, headaches, moodiness and mental and physical tiredness.

 

I read that pink grapefruit oil is excellent for cleansing the skin. It's supposed to be great for dealing with acne and excess oil, so this has been the main way I've been utilizing it. As I said earlier I was planning to include it in a perfume recipe but personally I actually like using it by itself! I just dab a little over the zits and leave it to work. Easy, natural pimple-elimination method!

 

Pink grapefruit oil is also great in helping to relieve muscle cramps and stiffness. It has a wide variety of other health benefits, a few of which include it being an anti-depressant, antiseptic, aperitif, lymphatic, stimulant, disinfectant and diuretic!

 

All in all, I've grateful for my pink grapefruit oil from Plant Therapy. I am interested to see how it will help with jet lag because I travel to California once a year with my dad, and gosh is it a struggle dealing with the five hour time difference! The oil is decently priced, and is 100% pure essential oil, cold-pressed.

 

 

 

The other oil I received was a Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil. This oil I had originally picked because I've seen it used before in perfumes and heard that it mixed well with pink grapefruit oil.

 

Unfortunately, this wasn't the case for me. There was nothing wrong with the oil itself, this was strictly a matter of personal opinion/preference.

 

I hate the smell.

 

I don't know how I've used other beauty items which had Ylang Ylang in them, because there's no way I'd wear something that smelled remotely like this oil. Perhaps the other products simply didn't have the real thing in them...and this is what the real thing smells like.

 

 The aroma is hard to describe. I'm sure there are people out there who probably love it, but nobody in my house was included in that group.

 

Now, I will give it this: There are still a number of health benefits.

According to Plant Therapy,

Ylang-ylang Essential Oil can assist with problems such as high blood pressure, rapid breathing and heartbeat, nervous conditions, as well as impotence and frigidity. Spiritual practitioners claim that the users of Ylang-ylang are those who have been drawn to the oil, and who in turn, suit it. Ylang-ylang Essential Oil is best suited for use in the perfumery and skincare industries.

 

 It is applied to the skin to promote relaxation, kill bacteria, and can even be used in a spray to kill head lice. Its suggested uses are, to defuse it into the air or add 3-4 drops to a warm bath to act as a natural aphrodisiac, help with a rapid heartbeat and breathing, and to help with anxiety.

 

So, it's definitely something to still consider using if you have any of these ailments. Personally these don't really apply to me, and the smell drives me crazy, but don't let that stop you if you were thinking of getting a bottle of this oil. This is just my own opinion - everybody has different tastes!

Got Acne? This Product May Help! {review}

Zits. Pimples. Acne.

Any way you look at it, or however you call them, I'm sure a number of y'all have been irked with acne at some point in your life.

It's a pain to adult women and adolescent girls alike, and something we'd all love to abolish if we could.

 

Personally, I've had to deal with zits since about age 13 or so. I'm thankful that it's never been terribly bad, but at the same time I just can't seem to ever rid myself of the annoying red blemishes!

 

I've tried scores of different treatments, from the natural sort to the not-so-natural. Everything from the harsh, chemical-laden Noxzema, to oatmeal and adzuki bean scrubs.

 

Naturally, I was pretty interested to see how the acne facial wash from LuvURCoconuts would work out. I was sent a bottle of the homemade skin formula, and have been using it for several weeks now.

 

I wasn't sure how to use this wash, in the beginning, as it didn't exactly come with any sort of instructions on application. However, after inquiring about it to LuvURCoconuts' shop owner, I found that it could be used either in the shower or separate at the sink.

 

I attempted both methods. First the "at-the-sink" way, which personally didn't work that great for me. It was too oily for my preference there, and took too long to wash off.

 I then tried it in the shower - this is how I've been using it, ever since. It works quite nicely there, and I have no problem with it being overly-oily or hard to scrub off - perhaps it has something to do with all the steam and hot water involved.

 

Anyways. I'm not sure how it's affecting my actual pimples, but it is a nice facial wash for just cleansing the facial pores and all. It brings a rejuvenating, fresh sensation when lathered and applied.

 

As I said previously, I've been using it for several weeks and it looks like it's going to last me a while, which is nice to know. I only use a small amount, maybe a teaspoon, each time I apply.

 

 

The best part about this wash? The ingredients are completely natural. I can rest assured that I'm not dumping tons of junk and chemicals on my skin!

LadyOfWindsor Fresh Perfume Choices for Summer {review}

 

Hola amigas!

Today we have another review, and it's once again highlighting some yummy natural perfumes.

 

I was sent some things from LadyOfWindsor, a delightfully unique shop on Etsy.

 

Firstly....wait for it...I just loved all the lace-y packaging.

So feminine and complementary of the actual product enclosed within. The little lace bag in which they came in is just so cute - I had to save even that for something else!

 

Not to mention, the charming little tin wherein the perfume oils were contained. Love it!

 

So, with the perfumes also came a calendula flower lip balm. This is a very mild smelling balm and it looks perfect for sensitive skin.

 

Personally I rarely use lip balm - mainly just because, I don't have to. It's rarely cold where I live, so less opportunity for lips to crack and chap. Also, I'm not going to lie - I have extremely oily skin.

So, yeah. For me, lip balm isn't a necessity.

 

The perfumes are all floral scents, and as the title of this post dictates, are perfect for summer.

The Freesia scent is very sweet and flower-y, as is the Magnolia. I personally like Magnolia best of the three and this is the one I'll likely wear most. It's a heavy, sweet feminine scent, similar to Freesia.

Lavender is more crisp and clear a scent, and smells almost identical to regular lavender essential oil, so if you like raw and totally natural smells, you'll probably like this one.

 

This review was a win on many levels. I think Lady Of Windsor does for one an excellent job at their aesthetics - packaging, design of the product, etc. And of course, the products themselves appear to be great quality, and handmade with care.
