//the shifting tide of what we call modesty

//yeah, that was me at 12 in the die-dye shirt over my very modest swimsuit which really didn't need an extra piece of fabric over it, but i had major body confidence issues, so go figure :/
Heyyyyy y'all!
Yes, tis' I...tis' me - and I daresay it's been so long since I last did a post on this blog that I can't even remember when that was. Ayayaya, it's been too long.
I'm thankful though that Bethany and Keturah have done such a great job in taking over the blog for me though. Thank you ladies so much! ♥
As my life gets fuller and busier, I will likely have to drop out entirely at some point just for the sake of practicality and prioritizing. *sniffle*

Anyways, just today I was browsing Facebook and I saw on my "memories", where three years ago today I had written a post here at APOC on modest swimsuits. I read it again and realized, wow, my views on some stuff have definitely changed since three years ago! Quite drastically, in some ways.
Is this bad? Well, I guess it depends on your perspective and viewpoint. To me it is a mixture of things, but definitely not bad.

As we continue on in this journey called life, we change. Our opinions usually start to bend a little over time as well on certain subjects which we allow. Sometimes we get influenced by others, and sometimes we just decide it point-blank that our past selves were a little off.

Well, before I start to ramble as I always tend to do, let me get to the point of this post.

There are a lot of reasons I just don't feel led to write much about modesty and the similar surrounding topics these days.

One huge reason being that there are so many other things which I deem more important, and more demanding of my time. For example, trying to end the abortion slaughter. The spiritual walk, growing closer to God. Bible study. Missions and evangelism. Overcoming my own sin issues. I could go on and on.
There are lots of things on my heart right now, but none of them involve carrying the banner of the 'modesty culture', if you will.

It's not that it's a bad thing, but I feel that in some ways the conservative, Christian (and typically homeschooled) community places way too much emphasis on what we wear and how "set apart" in our clothing we can be. I have to question how important this really is, in the long run. How important it is, in the scheme of eternity.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great thing to be aware of not showing too much skin or dressing so that your cleavage isn't spilling all out from your shirt. We definitely need to be conscience of how we dress and how we present ourselves as Christians. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Ghost, after all.
Yes, we need to be aware that men are looking at us, and we don't want to place any extra room for temptation on their plates if we can help it. (that being said, some men will find ways to sexualize you even if you're wearing a gunny sack and culottes - if they really aim to, they can find a way.)
Yes, our bodies are beautiful, incredible treasures. No, they are not things to be ashamed of, that need to be hidden.
There is no shame in withholding special details about your body from the outside world. No, I see it as a sense of dignity and pride. Not everyone deserves to see your most-private places. In fact, no one really 'deserves' to see them at all, period, besides yourself. Marriage is the one area where this changes, because you are in essence agreeing to share yourself with another human being for the rest of your life.
And besides, is it really /that/ classy to have half your butt hanging out from your shorts, regardless of who is looking at it? I mean, come on. I know that everyone has a different definition of classy, but mine sure doesn't involve looking sloppy, exposed and, well, the opposite of regal.

Personally, I wish we all lived like we used to in the garden of Eden. Stark naked and without a worry in the world! Clothes can be such a hassle and waste of time. But, unfortunately, in the United States, running around skyclad just wouldn't do, would it?
So we just have to deal with the fact that clothes are a necessity.

I guess my thing here is that modesty truly is very subjective. I'll use my own life as an example

A few years ago, I would never have dared to wear shorts. In fact, it would have been anathema. A few years before THAT, I would have shunned the thought of pants, period! I used to be so staunchly opinionated about being "skirts-only" that some people thought I was Mennonite. I had an idea that it was best to just wear plain, frumpy, shapeless clothes so that I didn't "blend in" with the world. I also had horrible self-esteem about my body, so I think that contributed to the whole thing. I used 'modesty' as an excuse so that I didn't have to show much of my curvaceous body. I even demanded on having my swimwear include ankle-length leggings so that you couldn't see my legs at all. I hated my legs.
As time as gone on, my confidence has drastically improved and now I LOVE the body God gave me! I love my legs, and everything else about me. I do not try to hide it. In fact, I like to wear clothes that tastefully compliment my curves, while still leaving "mysteries" to the eye.
I now am not ashamed to wear things like shorts, jeans, and form fitting blouses, to an extent. I do have my own personal "code" for what I won't wear out of personal preference and conviction, but I will say that my whole perspective on what is modest and immodest has really loosened up.

And I'm glad it has, because it has brought a sense of freedom.

I think that it is too easy to fall into a trap of unnecessary judgement, when we spend so much time trying to decide if one thing is modest or not. While we compare how long our jean skirts are supposed to be, I feel like we miss the point of what it means to be a Christ-follower.
As a girl in my mid-teens, I was probably comparable to a Sadducee or Pharisee at times.
I thought I was above all the other girls who went to public school/weren't homeschooled.
I thought I was above people just because I didn't show as much skin as they did.
I hid my feminine curves well and was downright proud of it, because it 'set me apart' and I looked so different than everyone else. I enjoyed the stares.

Please, y'all, I just want you to know I'm not trying to cast a stone or point fingers at anyone out there. I use my own life as the example here because, well, I can judge my own self and there's no wrong it doing that, right?

I'm just saying here, that I think modesty is useless and even harmful to our testimony when we let it control our lives, and turn us into judgmental, narrow-minded individuals who think we are better than other people. I think it can become a waste of time and effort, in some cases, as well.
Does it really matter if one's skirt is knee-length or calf-length? Does it /really/ matter if you like to wear high-necked tops and dresses but I prefer sleeveless with a lower neckline? (nothing cleavage baring, mind you)
While we read books on modesty and write blog posts and have lengthy discussions on how to make leggings or tank tops appropriate, might it be of more value to talk about how we can end abortion in our lifetimes? Or, maybe, how we can set an example to our fellow believers?
Or, perhaps, even better, how we can win souls to Christ?

If you feel led to dress a particular way, then by all means, do it.
Just remember, that we all have our own convictions, and unless something is blatantly ungodly or, in this case, blatantly immodest, we shouldn't judge one another for having a different opinion.
Ultimately, we should each consider our motives for everything we do, including what we wear.
But not to the point of creating a cult-like obsession with standing out from the world.

Because ultimately, ladies, we are defined by what is in our hearts - not by the pieces of fabric on our bodies.

P.S. I don't claim to be the ultimate authority on any of this. I am merely giving my own opinions and views, which, for all I know, could change yet again in a couple years - who knows? xD I think that as long as you focus on Christ, you will know what you are supposed to do.

Victorian Barn Dance {ClassyGarb}

Hey ladies! I apologize for the lack of posts lately on my part. Thank goodness for Bethany holding the fort down with her reviews! I have been entirely too busy for blogging in general, at this phase of my life. I started college! I'm getting certified as a fitness trainer through the International Sports Sciences Association. Also, I've been teaching piano, nannying, and continuing to study at the Ocala Piano Conservatory. Oh and trying to write. Way too much on my plate! But it's all been fabulous, nonetheless. God is ever good. ♥

I love cold weather (cold being anything less than 70 degrees - hey, it's FL.) because it gives me a chance to bring out the scarves, boots and cute sweaters. Oh, and hats! Winter accessories are just so classy!

This was my church outfit today. I just found the skirt at Goodwill yesterday. I love it! It makes me think of barn dances and prairie-girl chic.
My boyfriend's mom gave me the scarf for Christmas. It is my favorite color and sparkly so naturally I've been wearing that a lot lately.
And the Victorian boots - those I bought from Recollections a few years ago. I hadn't really been wearing them much recently but as I was cleaning my closet out last night I found them and sorta fell in love all over again.

Haha! I don't know what I was doing here with my face.

Photo creds to my little brother who's actually taller than me.

Yes, I Actually Love My Body

Think you're fat? Don't like how short you are? Don't like your not-so-chiseled stomach? Think you're too skinny and wish you had more curves? Wish your hair were straight instead of curly, or vice-versa? Unhappy with the fact that you don't have a thigh-gap?
Is it just me, or does it seem like everybody hates something about themselves? Nearly every woman or girl is dissatisfied with her physical appearance in some way or another. Even if it's a little detail that most people wouldn't even notice. WE ourselves notice. Oh, yes we do. And then we obsess over it until self-hatred even occurs.

For crying out loud, isn't about time we dumped the whole mess?

Self-hatred is so contagious.

In the media, we see it non-stop. All these articles on how to supposedly improve our physique, look hotter and get more attention from the dudes. Why? Because apparently we aren't amazing enough already? Apparently so, or articles like that wouldn't exist.

Does this bother you at all? It should. It certainly does, with me. There are many reasons why I'm irked by the self-hatred society has encouraged women to have toward their bodies, but I'm only going to give one for now.

Psalm 139:14 - "I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knoweth right well."

Did you see that? Fearfully and wonderfully made. Not ugly, worthless, or trash. Not even a fixer-upper, or a 'needs improvement.' Do you see where it says any of these things? Me neither.

Bath & Body Works! A favorite!
We are created in God's own Image. How could that make us anything less than beautiful?
Contrary to a lot of what I hear being said these days, I actually love my body. Yep, that's right. I love every inch of me. Wouldn't trade this skin for any other.

*GASP* She actually...is satisfied with her appearance! Is.....is that a crime? A sin? Pride? Self-conceited?

No, it's not a crime, and it's certainly not a sin. You can call it pride or self-conceit, but I call it gratitude and contentment.

For a while, as an early teen, this was hard for me to grasp. I was pretty dissatisfied with parts of my body, to be honest. When I was 12, I even thought I was fat. (I wasn't.)
I was ungrateful. I was missing the unique beauty that God had given me, and mistaking it for something less than beauty.

But that changed as I matured and learned more about God's plan for my life.

See, I realize how Christ made me to be the person I am, and not someone else. If I weren't supposed to be Leah Oxendine, I wouldn't be Leah Oxendine. He knew what He was doing when He put me on this planet. I've learned to see myself and all my flaws and appreciate everything because it's what makes me me.

My body is His temple. Ultimately it's only a borrowed vessel. Dare I insult my Creator by calling it ugly?

I love my long, soft auburn hair.
I love my turquoise-blue eyes.
I love my long fingers.
I love my hourglass shape. (Yes, it's curvy! And yes, I'm proud of that! Another shocker? I'm getting  sick of 'curvy' being used as a plus-size only term. You don't have to be plus-sized to be naturally curvy. And naturally curvy doesn't equal plus-size.)
I love that I'm fairly muscular.
I love that I'm not skinny.
I love that I'm not fat.
I love that I'm the weight that's normal for my body type.
I don't wish I was anything other than what I am.
I don't think I'm fat.
I don't think I've ever been fat.
I love that I'm taller than most.
And I love that I had scoliosis, because that kept me from being too much taller than my boyfriend. (haha!)

Newly arranged jewelry/dressing corner.
Kinda mindblown? Not used to seeing something where the girl wasn't complaining about her appearance?
Me either. That's exactly why I decided this post needed to be written. It's about time that positive things were written about one's self-image. It's about time somebody stepped out of the mire of self-hate, and learned to live in gratitude. It's about time a girl looked in the mirror at herself and smiled because she genuinely liked what she saw. It's about time a woman saw herself in a photo and thanked her Maker for crafting her the way He did.

Do you have a hard time finding things to love about yourself?

It's about time that changed.

It's about time we stop hating ourselves and learn to appreciate the bodies we 've been given.

One simple way to do this is to stop listening to the propaganda and lies of the modern media and society. Stop caring what the pop culture 'beauty experts' are saying.  Stop looking at billboard models and thinking to yourself how you don't measure up. Stop comparing yourself to friends or celebrities. Stop looking down at the scale and being disgusted with your weight.

What else can you do? Start digging into God's Word about what the definition of beauty truly is.
Start working on keeping your temple strong and healthy by feeding it real food (raw and unprocessed is always best!) and not convenience junk. Exercise at least several times a week to keep your blood circulating and your body functioning at its best. Try toning workouts to get everything firm and solid. Get outside and enjoy the great outdoors - the fresh air will clear your mind! Start surrendering your thoughts to Jesus and go to Him in prayer about your issues and struggles. Start serving others more and engaging in ministry, to get your mind off self-centeredness.
Start looking yourself in the mirror every day and thinking how gorgeous you are. Start finding things to appreciate about your appearance, even if they're small things to start out with.

Sparkly heels from Payless which I saw and decided were worth buying!
Are you willing to join me in this quest to abolish self-hate? Do you have a blog of your own? If so, I invite you to write a post of your own, on what you love about yourself and why. Please comment below with the link when you're done, so I can check it out! APOC may even feature it in the future.

Loving your body could be a major paradigm shift, if you've always lived in frustration or dissatisfaction with yourself. It may be very hard in the beginning. You might wonder if it will ever be possible.
But don't give up. With God, all things are possible. And in this case, I know He will bless you for your efforts. Why?

Because He always blesses a grateful heart.

Blessings,

Bohemian Lace {classygarb}

Hey ladies! How is your Sunday faring? I thought I'd share my church outfit today - trying to get some more outfit posts up since I haven't really posted many of those this year and, well, APOC is supposed to be a fashion blog. With actual outfit posts. Haha.

So, I saw this quote on Pinterest which I really loved.

"Always be kinder than you feel."

Last week after church, my parents informed me that I didn't smile very much during the time I was playing piano in the service. They said I looked like I didn't want to be there.
Yes, it hurt to hear that, because during that time I was playing I wasn't thinking that at all. I was just focusing on the music; and sometimes I tend to look somber when I'm playing my instruments, if I don't watch.

Nonetheless, when I saw that quote, it made me think about the act of smiling. My argument has always been, "well, if I put on a big cheesy grin while I'm playing it'll look super fake!"

Well, maybe yes and maybe no. It's only going to feel that way if you decide so. Ever since then, I've been making an effort to smile whenever I can. Smiles are wonderful things, people! And they're free gifts you can give to any human being on the planet that you choose.

Act the way you want to feel, and soon how you feel will follow suite.

"Be cheerful: it's contagious!"

ThePurpleBees Headbands {review}

Good afternoon, ladies! How have y'all been lately?
So you may be wondering about the BeTheLightTees giveaway. It ended last night and yes, we have a winner! And that winner is.....*drum rollllllllll*

Anna Mosley!
(Anna, congrats, and check your email!)

Now on to the main event of today's post! We have yet another hair accessory review.
I was sent an adorable homemade hairband from The Purple Bees!

This is the rose garden turban hairband. (Click to see the Etsy listing for it!) Isn't it darling? I love the feminine, floral retro look! The turban tie style is cute, too.

The headband itself is very comfortable to wear. It's durable and well-made, and I like the elastic scrunch-back. Super comfy! I'm actually wearing it now and I kinda forget it's even there!

As to the price, I think it's reasonable, considering the quality and cuteness plus the fact it's hand-made!

On the Etsy page:
"ThePurpleBees is dedicated to making quality, hand-made accessories that are both fashionable and comfortable to wear. We are a small but growing business, so stop by often to see what's new!"

Overall, I totally love this hairband! I know I will be wearing it a lot. You should visit The Purple Bees and take a look at all that they have available! There are hair bows, bun wraps, even boot cuffs! Lots of super cute designs!

Note: I was sent this item in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed remain mine and mine alone.

Manda Bees Fitness Headbands {review}

Hey ladies! Today we have a review from Manda Bees Headbands!
I was searching for some cute work-out headbands a few months back and found this awesome shop on Etsy. With the inexpensive prices and adorable designs it was love at first sight!

Here's what the shop description reads:

The BEST yoga fitness headband EVER. Guaranteed.

Our Best Seller - The FLAWLESS headband - is a barely there to-and-from yoga headband that will keep up with you on the mat, and is guaranteed no-slip.
At Manda Bees we make durable, perfect-fit headbands for every head, every hairstyle, and every occasion. From running headbands to bohemian festival style headbands, our designs are original, high quality, and fairly priced.

Always handmade. Always made in America.

I was sent an off-white lace headband from the Vixen Collection. (I don't really care for that name, but I just liked the lace look so xP) It's so cute and feminine! And white goes with just about everything, which is nice.

If all the Manda Bees headbands are like this one, I'm definitely buying myself another. Actually, I'm doing the Color Run in September so thinking I'm gonna get me this lunar one from the FLAWLESS collection. <3

It truly does match the shop description. Extremely lightweight and comfortable!

// Adorable meets functional. //

As of now, I hereby declare this shop my favorite fitness headbands place. After a bit of investigating other similar Etsy shops, I found the Manda Bees has the most inexpensive selection by far.
I'm willing to pay $7 for a good quality hair accessory, but not $27...which is the typical range for most other fitness hairbands on Etsy.

So overall, I love this shop and this headband. No complaints whatsoever!

You should totally go check out Manda Bees for yourself. I mean, need I even say any more?

BeTheLight Tees GIVEAWAY!

I don't know about you, but I have a ton of t-shirts in my closet. I don't know what it is about them, but they're almost like my default when it comes to tops. They're comfy, practical and oh so casual.

Anyway, I especially like them when they happen to have cool quotes, geeky references or 'Christian' messages.

Be The Light Tees offers some awesome t-shirts that fall under that last category. Here are a few of the many styles they offer. I was sent six shirts to review/use for a giveaway so check it out! (a GIVEAWAY!!!!)

This is one of my favorites. I love how bright and colorful it is.

"Real Love" Another favorite. I wear it everywhere. It says "Real love is unconditional." So true! Love the Bible verse referenced also.

"Psalms 103" I really like this one as well. One, because of the dandelion on the front. I love dandelions! Two, the verse on the back - such a marvelous reminder and promise!

Last but not least, we have not one by THREE t-shirts that will be given away to ONE 'lucky' winner! All shirts are in size medium.

"Storm"  So cute!

(The lighting here was weird, obviously. Don't know why it made the fabric look gray.)

I love my shirts from BeTheLight! They have some cool designs and I love the company's mission to point others to Christ through what you wear. Go check them out!

What are you waiting for? We've got a GIVEAWAY going, folks!! Get your entries in before it's too late!
